One Tree Hill
Though the tree at the top of the hill is no longer around, this former Māori Pa (fortified village) is set in Cornwall Park. It's a wonderful retreat on the weekends. A place in the city to unwind. The 360 degree views from the top of the hill are awesome. Irish rock band U2 wrote a song about the hill, 'One Tree Hill', which appeared on the the bands classic album 'The Joshua Tree'. It was written to honour New Zealander Greg Carroll, an employee of the band who died in a motorcycle accident in 1986. This place is an important memorial place for both Māori and other New Zealanders.
